Environmental Scans of Literacy Programs in PEI

We try to be as knowledgeable as possible of initiatives on PEI that support literacy and the development of essential skills. For this reason we conducted an Environmental Scan of the all the literacy programs in PEI. This first Environmental Scan (2010) is essentially a list of programs and contact information.

During a roundtable discussion with literacy leaders, we identified gaps in the delivery of programs. Our 2010 Environmental Scan however did not measure programs against criteria for ‘best’ or ‘leading’ practice and to our knowledge no such Environmental Scan was ever done in PEI.

In 2011, we hired The Quaich to conduct this research to expand our database and identify and promote leading models of practice in PEI. We worked with The Quaich and an advisory committee to determine the criteria. The study looked at 28 programs in PEI to identify leading and promising practices. Environmental Scan (2011)

L to R: Candace MacDonald (Best Start worker), Cole Mutch, and Leanne Mutch.
One leading practice identified was Best Start, a program of CHANCES Family Centre. Ann Robertson of CHANCES stated that they appreciated the designation as a leading practice and that it was gratifying to be recognized in this way.
