The PEI Literacy Alliance is looking for new board members who are passionate about improving literacy in PEI.
“Board members provide direction and leadership to the organization, and our dedicated team who are responsible for delivering our impactful programs.” Says Chair Serena Smith. “We have a great team and are excited to welcome new members to the board this fall at our AGM [September 24th, 2024], I would encourage all those with a passion for literacy and helping others to apply.”
Since its founding in 1990, the Alliance has worked to create a culture of literacy and learning in PEI, in which all have the opportunity to reach their literacy potential.
The PEI Literacy Alliance’s mission is to make literacy services more accessible for the people of Prince Edward Island. There is a high need for quality, accessible and sustainable literacy programs in PEI, as approximately 45% of working-aged people in PEI do not have the literacy skills needed to succeed in our digital world. (PIAAC 2012).
Strong adult literacy begins in early childhood, and starting to build literacy skills early is vital to ensuring children and youth can thrive educationally, socially, and emotionally.
However, over a quarter of children in Canada are starting school without some of the skills they need to learn to read. And children who start behind are more likely to stay behind. About 30% of children are not meeting grade level expectations in school, resulting in over a million children without future-ready literacy skills.
The Alliance works to address these challenges by raising the public’s awareness of literacy and essential skills, and by offering free literacy programs, such as the Imagination Library (free books for children), Ready Set Learn (free tutoring for children) and Essential Employability Skills (free training for adults).
PEI Literacy Alliance is a charitable and non-profit organization with more than 50 member organizations. The Board of Directors is the legal authority for PEI Literacy Alliance. Directors are responsible for the effective governance of the organization, which includes fiscal responsibility, strategic direction, and attending regular Board and Board committee meetings. The Board of Directors follows the Carver Policy Governance model.
At the Literacy Alliance, we envision a community where everyone is supported and encouraged to reach their full potential.
